NixOS is a Linux distribution built entirely on the principle of declarative system configuration. Instead of managing packages and systems manually, the whole operating system, including configuration, services and users, is defined as code. Changes are therefore reproducible, traceable and reversible at any time.
What sets NixOS apart:
Declarative system management (the entire system is described in a single configuration file)
Reproducibility (identical systems can be set up again at the push of a button)
Rollbacks and version control (changes can be safely undone)
Atomic upgrades (updates run reliably without damaging the system)
Integration with the Nix package manager and NixOps (a seamless path from development to deployment)
This makes NixOS a modern, robust and highly maintainable Linux distribution that is ideal for automated infrastructure, DevOps workflows and production server environments.
Our experience with NixOS in customer projects
We use NixOS extensively in our internal infrastructure. Our entire VM landscape is based on NixOS and is built fully declaratively. All systems are described and managed through infrastructure as code. We use Colmena to orchestrate our deployments, which gives us reproducible and traceable environments. Our CI systems rely on our own Nix runners, and we test infrastructure changes automatically to make sure every update works reliably.
Understanding the strengths and mastering the challenges
Thanks to our deep use of NixOS, we know the entire Nix ecosystem in detail, including working with flakes, complex applications and nix-shell environments. We are in regular contact with the maintainers of the Nix and NixOS projects and bring our experience directly into stable, maintainable setups. Challenges arise mainly when integrating into hybrid infrastructures or when moving from conventional Linux setups to fully declarative systems. In this area we have solid practical knowledge and proven approaches from real projects.
Our contribution to stable NixOS environments
We support the setup, operation and optimization of NixOS-based infrastructure. This includes automating deployments, setting up reproducible development environments and integrating with existing CI/CD systems. Our goal is to create systems that stay traceable, secure and maintainable in the long term, and that can be fully versioned through declarative configurations.
